Spiders serve a useful purpose on farms by destroying harmful insects. In the Philippines, spiders are also prized for their inclination to attack one another, which has given rise to the sport of spider fighting. While perched on the ends of hand-held bamboo sticks, and while bets are placed on their hairy little heads, pugnacious arachnids square off in the corners of public markets, bus stations, and other gathering places in the Philippines. The spider that gets wrapped up in the web of the other is declared the loser of the fight. Some farmers have reportedly developed profitable sidelines collecting and selling fighting spiders. Armed with flashlights, they comb sugarcane fields at night looking for ferocious specimens. They feed their eight-legged recruits milk laced with vitamin B-2 and sugar to keep them in fighting trim.
