The American Version of Bingo

There are two different versions of bingo available – the American version and the British version. Both are derived from the Lo Giucco del Lotto D’Italia. When the game came to America it was restructured by toy salesman Edwin Lowe and renamed Bingo.

The American version of the game or bingo is played in most places in the world except for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. Online bingo sites may offer one or both versions of the game. Both versions of the game are played in the same way. A number is randomly drawn and called. The player checks the cards for the number and covers or marks it if it appears. When the player makes the required pattern, she calls bingo. The numbers are verified and if they check out, the player is given the prize.

The American version of bingo is based on seventy-five numbers. The game is played on a card that is a five number by five number grid with the letters of the word bingo across the top. The B column contains a selection of number from one to fifteen; the I column contains a selection from sixteen to thirty; the N column contains a selection from thirty-one to forty-five; the G column contains a selection from forty-six to sixty; and the O column contains a selection from sixty-one to seventy five. All columns have five numbers except for the N column which has four with a free space in the middle.

A regular bingo game usually consists of a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line. Four corners may also be a part of a regular bingo depending on the house rules. Special games can consist of a variety of patterns. Patterns are the various letters, shapes or numbers that the square nature of the grid lends itself to. Games with patterns add some variety to the bingo playing session but not all players enjoy playing patterns.

Online bingo makes the game easy for the player. The software parameters can be set to purchase the cards, check and auto-daub the numbers, indicate a win and receive the winnings without the player being present. The player must decide on the number of cards she wants to play. In online bingo, the house rules and the player’s finances are the limiting factors. The American version allows for more variety in the kinds of games offered due to the square playing grid.
